The Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) is a group of some 2 300 leading asset owners, investment managers and service providers, including BNP Paribas Asset Management, seeking to build a more sustainable financial system and representing assets under management of more than USD 80 trillion.
The PRI’s philosophy - and that of BNPP AM - is that an economically efficient, sustainable global financial system is necessary for long-term value creation. Such a system will reward responsible investment and benefit the environment and society as a whole.
To achieve this, the PRI has developed a voluntary, aspirational set of six principles for responsible investment and facilitates collaboration on their implementation. The group also fosters good governance, integrity and accountability, and addresses the obstacles to a sustainable financial system in the form of market practices, structures and regulation.
Pursuing progress: the annual 'PRI in Person' conference
As a platform for discussing challenging issues and reporting on progress, the PRI holds the world’s leading annual conference on sustainable investment – 'PRI in Person' – which this year is held on 10-12 September in Paris, with an expected attendance of more than 1 700 delegates.
Over 100 expert speakers from across the investment industry and beyond will showcase the latest innovations in responsible investment practice and, across six content streams, debate the impact of emerging environment, social and governance (ESG) issues and global trends.
Broad-ranging topics concerning sustainable finance
Following the conference opening by PRI CEO, Fiona Reynolds, and the keynote speech by France’s Minister of the Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, the event will see a total of 35 separate debate, lecture and discussion sessions over its three days. Among the topics covered will be:
- Ensuring the private equity structure supports responsible investment
- The role of central banks in achieving the 2015 Paris climate agreement aims
- AI and ESG: how is technology being used by hedge funds?
- The transition to a net-zero emissions economy
- Incorporating the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals into investment strategies
- ESG in credit risk and ratings
In one of the concluding sessions, Helena Viñes Fiestas, BNP Paribas Asset Management’s Global Head of Stewardship and Policy and a member of the EU’s Technical Expert Group, will be involved in a discussion of what the EU taxonomy is, and how it should be used.
Indeed, BNP Paribas Asset Management’s close involvement with the PRI goes back many years.
A PRI signatory since 2006, BNPP AM has implemented its own responsible investment policy since 2012 and applies ESG criteria to almost all of its mutual funds, in addition to its dedicated SRI funds. For several years in a row, BNPP AM has been awarded the top score of A+ for its global approach to responsible investing by the PRI, winning praise for the level of excellence of its research, transparency and the integration of ESG criteria.
