2019 Investment Forum: Disruptive change in a superstar economy (1/5)

A global economy facing ever increasing disruption calls for even more active asset management. As investors, we need to identify not only the opportunities in the superstar firms of the future, but also the threats facing them from regulation, geopolitics, constrained monetary policy and climate change.

Two of the biggest challenges we face as an asset manager in determining where to invest our clients’ money are

1)      how to anticipate the disruptive change that can upend an industry and the companies that operate in it

2)      how to identify the superstar firms of the future that are often (though not always) the cause of the disruption.

To help us better understand these issues, BNP Paribas Asset Management held its second Investment Forum, on the theme of disruptive change in a superstar economy, on 12 November 2019.

We heard four thought-provoking presentations on

  • forecasting climate change – Global Head of Sustainability, Jane Ambachtsheer, and Head of Climate Change Investment Research, Mark Lewis
  • market regulation in a superstar economy – Nobel Prize winning economist Professor Jean Tirole, Toulouse School of Economics
  • the evolving relationship between the US and China – Amy Celico, Albright Stonebridge Group
  • the US economic and policy outlook ahead of the 2020 presidential election – Professor Jason Furman, Harvard Kennedy School, Peterson Institute for International Economics .

Our chief investment officers and senior portfolio managers then held roundtables to discuss the investment implications of each of these broad trends.

We believe these investment forums play a critical role in helping us evaluate the opportunities and the threats.

In this series, Investors’ Corner presents the main points from the four keynote speakers.
